Scuba Gods

Experience Counts

Have you heard the 2 best jokes about the dive business? Joke # 1: “I made a small fortune in the dive business....I started out with a large fortune, and now I have a small fortune”. Joke # 2: “How do you make a million dollars in the dive business?....You start with 2 million, and sell when it gets down to a million”. Man, those are some good ones, but unfortunately, both jokes have some basis in reality. While working in the dive business can be a great job, the truth is, scuba diving is a hard way to make a living. It’s physically demanding, the gear upkeep can be a maintenance nightmare, the business cycle is linked to tourism which runs hot and cold, and competition is fierce. Many  of the players on the field get taken apart in the first few innings of the game, including business owners, instructors, and divemasters. The dream of running a dive business and doing scuba for a living evaporates quickly when reality sets in. That’s why it’s important to dive with a company that has an established track record and extensive resume of experience. Scuba Gods is proud to be such a dive company, in business for over 14 years in Hawaii. Here are just some of the ways we put our experience to work for you....

Diving The Reef

Understanding an ecosystem as complex as a Hawaiian coral reef is completely beyond the comprehension of most recreational scuba divers. Many of them watch way too much television and read too many dive magazines, and come to Hawaii only to see the big stuff, like sharks and rays, which make up only a very small percentage of what’s actually down there. Unfortunately, when these animals sometimes fail to materialize, many divers end up being disappointed, which is absurd, when they could have had a completely different experience with a “knowledgeable” dive guide. By “knowledgeable”, we mean years of experience, not days, weeks, or months. To truly understand how a coral reef works, you need to dive it, year in and year out. Then, and only then, will it’s many secrets be revealed. A seasoned dive guide comes to understand fish behavior, learns how to locate invertebrates underneath a desert of sand, and safely interacts with marine life in a non-threatening manner.

The bottom line: Over the past 14 years, Scuba Gods has logged over 2500 dives. If you think you will have the same underwater experience on the reef with someone who’s been doing this job for days, weeks, or months, think again. Trust us, understanding the many complexities of how a coral reef works is not something you learn overnight.

Teaching Scuba

Statistically, scuba diving is safer than bowling. In other words, more people per year get injured in a bowling alley than they do scuba diving! Although scuba diving is safe if you follow the rules, break the rules, and all bets are off. Break the rules, and scuba diving can seriously injure, and even kill you. Unfortunately, many people who work in this business seem to forget that fact. Instead of safety being the #1 priority, certification and resort courses are overloaded with students in order to make a buck, and conducted at a whirlwind pace in order to turn over the maximum amount of people in the minimum amount of time. To further complicate matters, the scuba business has a high degree of employee turnover. Many instructors are young, inexperienced, and “Just off the jet”, as we say here on Maui. Unfortunately, many have very little real world experience teaching scuba diving. They are thrown onto the front lines where they learn how to teach through trial and error. Hopefully, they won’t be using your course as a training ground, and you as a guinea pig. Let’s face it: No one wants a first time surgeon for a serious operation, or a first time pilot for a transatlantic flight, for obvious reasons. Why settle, then, for a first time instructor when learning how to dive?

The bottom line: Over the past 14 years, Scuba Gods has conducted over 300 certification courses and over 500 resort courses. Patience is the key to teaching scuba, as well as using teaching methods that make learning safe, easy and fun. If you think you will have the same experience during a certification or resort course with someone who’s been doing this job for days, weeks, or months, think again. Trust us, learning how to teach scuba the right way is not something you learn overnight.

Being Professional

Dealing with 100’s of divers every year is not always the easiest job, but Scuba Gods has got you covered. We promise you a first class, personalized, all inclusive diving experience, and we deliver. There are no surprises waiting for you after you get off the plane. Surprises are great for birthday parties, but not for scuba diving, that’s why all dives are conducted in a safe, organized, and professional manner.

The bottom line: Scuba Gods wants your dives to be the highlight of your vacation on Maui. Having our name and reputation behind this business for over 14 years is the ultimate motivator in order to make that happen. If you think you will have the same scuba experience with someone who’s just collecting a paycheck, think again.
